Barnaby Joyce claims victory in New England

Updated: 8:55 am, Sunday, 3 December 2017

Barnaby Joyce is heading back to Canberra after a decisive win in New England's by-election.

Barnaby Joyce is packing his bags for Canberra, eager to put the dual-citizenship saga behind him, after a decisive win in New England's by-election.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Sky News the result, in which Mr Joyce secured more than 60 per cent of the vote, is emphatic.

'I'm so thrilled that we're getting Barnaby back... The people of New England have done that with a very emphatic swing,' he said.

'In fact the swing to Barnaby was actually higher than the Labor party's primary vote, so it was a very emphatic swing... This is a very, very big result.'

Despite 16 other opponents, the safe Nationals seat returned Mr Joyce to the second-highest rank in government early on Saturday evening.

Mr Joyce's return to Canberra is expected to shore up a disrupted coalition that has seen dissenting members call for Mr Turnbull's resignation.

'There have been some personalities and there have been some tensions, there is no doubt about that,' Mr Turnbull told reporters earlier on Saturday when questioned about the calls from within the Nationals for his resignation.

Minutes after the meeting, Mr Joyce told reporters he had been contacted by one of the rumoured agitators, Queensland MP George Christensen.

He said Mr Christensen had affirmed his allegiance to the party with the return of Mr Joyce and following the announcement of the banking royal commission.

This result is a vote for common sense in the wake of the citizenship saga. It is also a slap in the face to Bill Shorten whose handling of the Sam Dastyari affair was a poor reflection on his leadership.
Our resident socialist may have another view, but I see this as a plus for the Turnbull Government (not that Malcolm deserves any credit) and a reminder to Bill Shorten that the Dastyari affair might still come back to haunt him.

What a giant waste of money

The Turnbull chicken show really dropped the ball on this one.
The sensible thing to do, was to give a two week amnesty to those politicians who were born here, to denounce any preciously unknown potential duel citizenship.

A simple fix for this bungle would to simply add one sentence to the swearing in oath saying, "I hereby renounce all rights of holding or claiming citizenship-to any other country."

I think the constitution would have to be changed to convince the high court mate. And that can only be done by referendum, not by legislation.

It would appear that the mud from the fake news about Barnabies alcoholism, affairs and "bastard" child did not stick.

Now I wonder who the sleaze behind the fake news could have been? http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/rolleyes.gif

scepo's right on this Flin. It requires a change to the Constitution.

If you are having problems getting outraged over Barnaby's citizenship status, focus on this.

Labor MPs Justine Keay, Josh Wilson and Susan Lamb all have British heritage and are in doubt.

Mr Turnbull has confirmed the Government will use its numbers to send Opposition MPs to the High Court.

"We can't in good conscience fail to refer anyone … to the High Court if it is clear there are substantial grounds for believing that they are ineligible to sit in the Parliament," he said.

Just to put it into perspective. http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/biggrin.gif http://fairdinkumnewschat.b1.jcink.com/uploads/fairdinkumnewschat/lbill.gif

You might be reading a bit more into this than it deserves Charles. http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/biggrin.gif

Labor were never going to win New England, and they were never going to spend a dollar there.

Last election Labor only got 7% of the 1P vote. This time they got 11% - up a whopping 60% on the last election. http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/biggrin.gif See what you can do with figures if you've a mind. http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/biggrin.gif

I'll let the conservatives gloat a little on this for a while - you've had so little to celebrate for two years now. http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/biggrin.gif http://fairdinkumnewschat.b1.jcink.com/uploads/fairdinkumnewschat/lbill.gif

I'll stick with the view that Sam Dastyari, the Chinese Spy, will fade from public conscience as soon as the Bennelong by-election is over on December 16th. http://fairdinkumnewschat.b1.jcink.com/uploads/fairdinkumnewschat/lbill.gif

No heart???? Who me????

Pollies and political parties all have far more money than me and none of them are good enough to deserve a donation from me. http://fairdinkumnewschat.b1.jcink.com/uploads/fairdinkumnewschat/smiley_don_t_know.gif
