Huge blaze at iconic Camden Markets in London
Monday, 10 July 2017 8:02AM
Firefighters are battling a large fire at an iconic London marketplace.
A large fire has broken out in London’s Camden Markets. The London Fire Brigade said it had sent 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters to the area.
Vision shows the shopping and clubbing complex well-engulfed in flames just after midnight on Monday London time.
Camden High Street has been closed and nearby access lanes restricted to emergency services use.
"It is unknown at this stage if any persons are injured, we await update," a London Fire Brigade statement reads. A subsequent London Ambulance statement said they are not yet treating anybody at the scene.
Social media users have been posting dramatic pictures of the significant blaze, with some saying they hoped everyone was safe as they watched ambulances streaming towards the blaze, which some described as a “crazy” scene facing firefighters.
"Just drove past Camden market and there’s a huge fire on top a building, close to the Loch Bridge! Crazy crazy scenes," one social media post reads.
Eyewitness Danny Judge, who was working at the Lockside Lounge bar, said: "In just a few minutes the flames went from nothing to absolutely everywhere.
"It spread so quickly and the heat was intense. Security quickly started evacuating people from the bar -- there was just a sense of shock.
"Luckily the area should have been empty at this time of night as it was closed."
Witness Joan Ribes, 24, told Sky News UK: "We called the police to close the street to the traffic because it was very dangerous, the fire was flying through the air to the surrounding areas.
"The fire was moving very fast. People were watching, but we were scared the building could explode at any time since there are restaurants with kitchens nearby."
One witness described the seat of the fire as being “near where the indoor market stalls are”.
Camden Markets is a cluster of several buildings containing more than 1000 shops and stalls, divided into several areas. About 40 million people visit the markets each year.
The market and surrounds was hit by a major fire in 2008, causing the closure of the major night scene and tourist attraction for several months.
Mrs C and I have fond memories of our visit to Camden Markets when we went to London. It had a great atmosphere and a real buzz and we picked up some great bargains.
How many more disasters is London going to experience this year?
