Charles Manson, mastermind of murderous cult, dies aged 83.
Manson encouraged his followers to kill nine people in the Los Angeles area in 1969.
Charles Manson, the US cult leader who orchestrated a string of gruesome killings in Los Angeles by his "family" of young followers in the late 1960s, has died aged 83.
The California Department of Corrections, where Manson had been held since 1989, said he died of natural causes on Sunday night (local time).
The killings committed by Manson's followers horrified the world and revealed a violent underbelly of a counterculture that preached peace and love.
Investigators learned Manson sent a group of disaffected young followers to commit murder as part of a twisted, quasi-religious belief that it would launch a race war.
They occurred on successive August nights in 1969 and terrorised the city of Los Angeles.
Actress Sharon Tate, aged 26 and eight months pregnant, was stabbed 16 times in the early morning hours of August 9, 1969, by members of Manson's cult at the rented hillside house she shared with her husband, filmmaker Roman Polanski, in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles.
Four friends of the celebrity couple, including coffee heiress Abigail Folger and hairstylist Jay Sebring, were also stabbed or shot to death that night by Manson followers, who scrawled the word "Pig" in blood on the home's front door before leaving.
Polanski was away in Europe at the time.
The following night, members of Manson's group stabbed grocery owner Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary to death, using their blood to write, "Death to Pigs" and "Healter Skelter" — a misspelled reference to the Beatles song Helter Skelter — on the walls and refrigerator door.
Although Manson did not personally kill any of the seven victims, he was found guilty of ordering their murders.
He was later also convicted of ordering the murders of music teacher Gary Hinman, stabbed to death in July 1969, and stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea, stabbed and bludgeoned that August.
'I just tried to help them stand up': Manson on his followers
Three months after the killings, a Manson follower was jailed on an unrelated charge and told a cellmate about the bloodbath, leading to the cult leader's arrest.
Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Manson maintained during his tumultuous trial in 1970 that he was innocent and that society itself was guilty.
"These children that come at you with knives, they are your children. You taught them; I didn't teach them. I just tried to help them stand up," he said in a courtroom soliloquy.
In the annals of American crime, Manson became the embodiment of evil, a short, shaggy-haired, bearded figure with a demonic stare and an "X'' — later turned into a swastika — carved into his forehead.
"Many people I know in Los Angeles believe that the Sixties ended abruptly on August 9, 1969," author Joan Didion wrote in her 1979 book The White Album.
After a trial that lasted nearly a year, Manson and three followers, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten, were found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. Another defendant, Charles "Tex" Watson, was convicted later.
All were spared execution and given life sentences after the California Supreme Court struck down the death penalty in 1972.
Atkins died behind bars in 2009. Krenwinkel, Van Houten and Watson remain in prison.
Another Manson devotee, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, tried to assassinate then-president Gerald Ford in 1975, but her gun jammed. She served 34 years in prison.
If there is a hell, Satan better watch out because Manson will want to be head honcho.
He should have been put to death decades ago - nothing but pur evil!
