Educators knew more cuts to public schools and support services were inevitable.

But the scale of the $64 million in savings announced yesterday has taken many by surprise.

The question is whether Education Minister Sue Ellery has simply chosen some low-hanging fruit to please the bean counters and get them off her back, or has she picked programs in need of trimming?

There is no doubt that many of the services under the axe are hugely important to the people directly affected. Services such as all five Schools of the Air, seen as vital by parents already battling tough conditions in the outback.

While the minister denies country students have been targeted, the State’s most isolated students will be among those worst affected, with the closures of residential colleges at Moora and Northam and the Schools of the Air.

The axe is also falling on some of the public system’s most successful schools. All 18 high schools with specialist academic, music and art programs for gifted and talented students will lose one-quarter of their funding.

Whether that has some effect on the stellar results which education ministers like to boast about remains to be seen.

For those that like to ell us it is Labor who stand for education. http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/unsure.gif

It is looking like stuff the rural areas, they don’t vote for us so they can pay for labor’s election promises so that the metro area can vote Labor in again. They are closing scooIs and selling the land for housing again. They haven’t learnt http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/mad.gif http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/mad.gif http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/mad.gif http://fairdinkumnewschat.b1.jcink.com/uploads/fairdinkumnewschat/smiley_don_t_know.gif http://fairdinkumnewschat.b1.jcink.com/uploads/fairdinkumnewschat/soapbox_888.gif from the last time they did that. I believe the living away from home allowancehas been drastically cut. Now we have some country kids having to board somewhere to enable them to go to high school. They also have to board for an extra year as yr 7s are highschool now. It reminds me of the GST stance, ie: WA votes lib anyway so we’ll use their GST monies to buy votes in the east, who cares what happens in the West as long as the money keeps coming. They all give me the whoops, lib, lab and whatever they may call themselves, all in the trough with delusions of grandeur and power trips. I apologise to the few sensible (IMO) people in government who are fighting a losing battle to govern for all. I agree with your comment Lee re labor and education. http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/mad.gif http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/mad.gif http://fairdinkumnewschat.com/mad.gif

There is no doubt there was (and probably still is) a certain amount of dead-wood in head office and in district offices. This and only this should have been targeted.

Slicing funding to rural programmes is often the Labor idea of cost cutting. They look after their own electorates and show scant regard for the most isolated students and country students in electorates that are strongholds for Liberals and/or National Party strongholds.

Same across state borders Charles. A lifetime of experience tells us that.
