The Tesla Semi electric truck exceeds the hype
user posted image

The much-awaited reveal of the Tesla Semi electric truck took place in Hawthorne, California, in typical Elon Musk style. Speculation prior to the presentation was substantially exceeded with its claimed range well beyond the 300 miles (500 km) expected and acceleration figures that place the unladen tractor unit in sports car territory.

After the two Tesla 18-wheel Semis swung into position, Elon Musk stepped out of the high-roof model to begin his presentation. The first statistic presented was the Semi's acceleration to 60 mph (97km/h) from standstill which, he said it does in 5.0 seconds when empty. That is sports car territory. Perhaps even more impressive was the claim of reaching 60 mph fully laden to the maximum permissible total ... [more]

Charles Manson, the US cult leader who orchestrated a string of gruesome killings in Los Angeles by his "family" of young followers in the late 1960s, has died aged 83.

The California Department of Corrections, where Manson had been held since 1989, said he died of natural causes on Sunday night (local time).

The killings committed by Manson's followers horrified the world and revealed a violent underbelly of a counterculture that preached peace and love.

Investigators learned Manson sent a group of disaffected young followers to commit murder as part of a twisted, quasi-religious belief that it ... [more]

Asbestos detection can be costly for imported car owners

The dismantling of some imported classic cars, including Ford Mustangs, for asbestos testing has cost some enthusiasts significant sums.

Until the discovery it was deadly, asbestos use in Australia was one of the highest per capita in the world.

As well as its use as a building material, in piping and for insulation, it was also a very good friction material for brakes and clutches.

When the use of chrysotile asbestos was banned on December 31, 2003, dodgy stories ensued, such as certain enthusiasts stockpiling asbestos brake pads and clutch linings ... [more]

A Melbourne abattoir has been allowed to continue operating despite being investigated for possible animal cruelty, after secretly recorded footage showed it boiling chickens alive in its slaughter process.

The video was secretly recorded earlier this year by animal rights campaigner Tamara Kenneally and a group of friends.

The abattoir slaughters egg-laying hens that are considered "spent" when they are 18 months old.

Industry regulations require chickens to be stunned and then immediately killed by a slit to the throat.

Onlookers had drooled over the gorgeous looker but — I’m a bit ashamed to admit — I was relieved when it was time to give it back.

Getting in and out pinpointed every potential twinge while minimal rear visibility tested my creaky neck.
